Would it be crazy to use a duck boat on the flats?

Post by BloodyChamp » Thu Aug 09, 2018 11:23 pm

I've been wanting a flats boat for a few years and it only hasn't happened because my brotherinlaw and sister beat me to it and took me often. They had their 2nd child so that ended that. Then I was going to spring for my own again but I needed my new truck more.

I've always thought those all welded aluminum boats with a mud motor would be the perfect low key flats boat. Mandalay, Spring Warrior type water. Nothing glamorous about my fishing. And I've always hated boats that are seemingly as heavy as they could make them like Carolina Skiffs. And those motors manage not to hit rocks as much. I tore my prop up the other day at Mandalay, having finally got a small motor for my Gheenoe 3 years ago at the then age of 34. I'd been paddling until then because I'm so paranoid about rocks when I go to the flats, and because paddling is about the only way if river fishing around here is your favorite like me. I think I want to get more into flats fishing though. With everything flooded all year river fishing stunk and I didn't want to tear my new truck up going to the few spots you could catch any on the river.

Where is Mandalay, I'm not familiar with that? I'm usually out on the flats at least a few times a week in the kayak. With all the rain recently the fishing hasn't been good at all. Too much fresh water and the water is very murky. We are planning on heading to St Joe bay next weekend to try some scalloping. Last time we were there early this year the water in the bay was clear. Not sure after all this rain.

The Aucilla River mouth landing. Older people remember it as Williams landing. As far as my fishing lifestyle, I actually have the most in common with kayakers outside of the kayak part lol! I like paddling, quiet, fishing in secret type spots, and just exploring. Big boats have never been my deal but they're growing on me for the reasons I said and a few more.

You weren't at Wakulla beach the other night in a Gheenoe were you? There was a guy there at low tide when I was there.

Naw I've never launched there but that would be a good spot for a Gheenoe.

You said you posted at fcka right? What actually happened to me the other day when I broke my prop was almost a much bigger disaster. If you remember garydroze's stories about the gators plus bad judgement at East River...my full story the other day belongs in that thread. I was very unwise trying what I tried and will never do it again until I make some upgrades even if it's not a new boat altogether.

I've fished my duck hunting boat for almost 20 years at Steinhatchee. 16 foot alumnacraft with a 23 go devil long tail. Fish, scallop, gig flounder. I bought this old go devil in 1999 new, have run the shit out of it, change the oil every five years weather it needs it or not. Best boat I've got, and I have seven.

I knew I wasn't crazy lol they're just perfect to me. I don't get the obsession with those enormous wads of fiberglass and molded plastic and 23 consoles.

I'm at the St Marks lighthouse right now and just saw a 16' boat with mud motor coming in. 👍

I've never even had to replace the prop.

I'm getting 1 if I ever get anything else. Granted this was 1 bizarre summer where 2 of the 3 rivers I fish were flooded literally the whole summer so I might be over it by next summer if we're back to normal but I'll still get 1 eventually when I get to old to paddle all day.

If you don't need a high horsepower one, build it. Get the kit off the web and buy an engine from harbor freight.

My 23 TO go-devil was about $3,000 in 1999.
